Kuchukua Hatua is a non-profit organization with the aspiration to showcase the brilliance of Afro descendant cultures and arts.

The name Kua-Hatua is an amalgamation of the two Swahilian words : Kuchukua-Hatua, which means "take action"!

Vision

Within our society there is a huge ignorance about African history, African cultures and African arts. This ignorance generates and accumulates harmful, oppressive and false stereotypes about people from African descent. Kuchukua Hatua aims to counteract this ignorance by showcasing the brilliance of African arts and cultures.

Mission

Kuchukua Hatua has deliberately chosen the elephant as her mascot. The intelligence and the memory of the elephant represents Kuchukua Hatua’s mission to spread information, primarily, about African history, cultures, philosophies, and arts. This forms our ideological frame, from where we operate to take on topics like racism, colorism, sexism, patriarchy, LGTBQIA+fobia, ableism, etc.
Kuchukua Hatua draws inspiration from the strong family unit of the elephant, mainly because one of our goals defines itself as the unification and empowerment of human beings. The fact that elephants live in a matriarchal society reflects the critique Kuchukua Hatua has on our patriarchal society. Kuchukua Hatua strongly believes that, disregarding our societies patriarchal views, girls and women could and SHOULD be leaders. Kuchukua Hatua strongly believes that everyone has the necessary competences to transform this world into a pleasant place to live, for every single individual. This means a place without oppression, discrimination and marginalization.

Therefore Kuchuka Hatua is a fourfold assigment, namely :

  1. Provide correct information

  2. Raise awareness

  3. Build community

  4. Invest in creativity in both action and way of thinking
